D'amus - The Producer and CEO
TheBeatBox Entertainment logo
Since childhood D’amus, also known as Adama Sidibe, has always been a party lover and a dance fanatic, as his rhythmic skills he won many dance contests and earned a loyal following. As a child he would beat-box and make vinyl-scratching noises with his mouth while listening to music, or just by himself, which he still does by the way. This is the reason why the company is called TheBeatBox Entertainment. Also, even before his teen years, he and some friends would make small djembés (jembays: African Drums) from scratch and then charge little girls of theirs age group lunch money to play the drums for them and their friends. However, It wasn’t until about 17 years later (at 25 years old. one year after he started playing piano) that D’amus found out that his father’s uncle whom he is named after used to play about 5 instruments in the 50’s through the 60’s himself, meaning that the party could start but wouldn’t really be a great one till Grandpa D’amus showed up. In one word, music runs in the family. In addition to that, growing up in a very diverse culture of music and art through elementary and middle schools, D’amus listened to music from all around the world. Hence, he started to develop a very good ears for music without knowing that he’d one day become a multi-talented composer himself. This open-mindedness to world music would later on enable him to compose music of all types, and making “Dancehall Reggae his favorite music to dance to versus classical his favorite to listen to (The 2 extreme opposites). Additionally, throughout middle and junior high schools D’amus carried the same mentality of enjoying music from diverse countries and backgrounds, during which period he was very well known for always making up his own dance moves and memorizing songs of American and European artists; which also made him more popular, giving him an edge and a confidence in the music industry going to high school. Then, in the 10th grade he started rapping and writing spoken words of his own. He sometimes performed on stages before various crowds; on many occasions he did it for the love of music instead of for payment. In the 12th grade he decided to go to school to get a degree in Engineering. As the first-born male it was obligation to be the primary bread owner of the household. This new goal led him to become an honor student throughout the rest of his academic years. Moreover, a few years later he realized that he wasn’t really made for corporate, sitting in a cubical all day. Hence, he started free styling on the piano at the dorm lobbies and lounges of Columbia University. Then a year later his beloved and older sister Chu bought him a Casio keyboard as his 24th birthday gift. For, she often heard him beat-boxing and thought he could one day be a great composer. As a Mathematics tutor on campus at the time, D’amus used to see students with the Dummy books for everything. He, then, went and got the Piano for Dummies book, read a few pages just to know how to get his fingers across the keyboard. Then the dragon was unleashed.
